Forthcoming Exams

Whilst many year 7 students have settled into life at Holyrood, Year 11 students are going through an important stage in their future.  As exams soon approach a reminder to all Year 11 students that revision sessions are being held at lunchtimes on Wednesday and Friday in A5.  Good Luck to all Year 11’s and Sixth Form students taking exams.

 Year 9 Studies

In Year 9 at the moment students are finishing off there unit of work on Human Issues.  Poverty – a wide issue in the media (particularly with the Make Poverty History campaign) highlights the everyday issue faced by some people.  Concentrating on poverty in Africa and schemes aimed at alleviating it (long term) many Year 9 students are wishing to contribute and make a difference.  Many charities including Oxfam and Farm Africa run schemes to ‘Loan a Goat’.  A goat or pair of goats are loaned to a family where they sell products produced by that animal to raise money and hopefully send their children to school and buy essentials.  In return they give the first female ‘kid’ back to the charity which is then ‘loaned’ to another family – in essence they repay not with money but with a baby goat.  I would like to thank all students and those who have helped the Year 9 tutor groups to raise both awareness and sponsorship for this.  Oxfam even publish a Christmas catalogue full of ideas – not just goats but chickens, bicycles and even school equipment can be bought to be donated to poverty stricken areas.  A super idea.

Year 10 GCSE

Year 10 students are soon underway with their G.C.S.E coursework for Geography.  An important piece which is 20 % of their end grade.  By starting this term it gives students the opportunity to work on their coursework during their summer holidays and proves valuable that they do so.

I would like to end by hoping everyone has a good summer (hopefully our weather will mimic this) and a safe one.  As many Year 8 students know by studying Brazil, when Christopher Columbus set off on his travels and landed on an island he thought  was India he had actually found South America.  Obviously he wasn’t listening too carefully in his Geography lessons!
