THE  LEARNING CENTRE NEWS

Link to the Holyrood Learning Centre Newsletter

Our Learning Centre has been extended and completely modernised. We now have 30 state-of-the-art computers with black and white and colour laser printers, all with broadband Internet access.

A teaching assistant is available all day to help and advise students, especially with ICT problems.

We have a good stock of regularly up-dated fiction to suit all age ranges and non-fiction books to support the curriculum and for students’ interest.

Newspapers and magazines are also available and we are now purchasing non-book materials, such as tapes (talking books), CDs, videos and DVDs, which may be borrowed by students.

TVs, video, DVD and tape players are available for students to use with school resource material and our extended opening times allow students to have access to the Learning Centre from 8.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily.

This view shows the old library with the new corner-link boarded across.  The office at the end will be removed and the room will be widened.  Both rooms will be completely refurbished to provide a new exciting, L-shaped  learning environment.

This view is taken from almost the same position and only six weeks later than the one on the left.  A large number of people worked very hard to make this possible for the new term.  Mr J Phillips and his team, together with the contractors should be congratulated.

This photograph shows the new corner-link between the old library and the A1 computer room.  Both of these areas have been completely re-furbished as the 'Learning Centre' in time for the autumn term.  The corner link overlooks the 'C' Courtyard which is soon to be developed as an outdoor theatre area.

Two of these circular study units have been installed in the learning centre together with linear groupings as shown below

The school's computer network is growing all of the time.  It will, in future, be controlled by new 'Ranger' management software.  This new control system has a lot of very useful features to ensure the secure management of such a large network.
